Champion in the making?

alpaca crai at snowshoe farm, peacham, vtWe sure hope so!  This handsome little guy was born yesterday (July 7). He is full brother to our multi-champion male, Snowshoe Aristides, and he is looking at least as good as Ari looked at birth. The luster and crimp on this baby is breathtaking! I can’t get a pic that does justice to his fleece. And is he ever lively. He was running (albeit not very steadily) around the pasture within a few hours of his birth!

I wrongly stated his weight on a previous facebook post. He weighed only 24.5 lbs (not 25.5) at birth. But he gained a pound overnight! Not the biggest cria his dam has birthed, but a very large size for a newborn alpaca.  You can get an idea of his size in these pics. For any of you who have seen his dam, Hannah’s Julie, she is a big girl and tall for an alpaca. And her baby looks like he’s too tall to easily nurse!

Hannah’s Julie, was the first cria born on our farm and is without a doubt the most valuable production female in our herd. All her offspring have been very high quality. This baby’s sire is TNT Peruvian Hit Man who is owned by Oh My! Alpacas. We’re in negotiations to get Hit Man out to our farm; no news yet, but we’ll let you know if and when this outstanding stud becomes available for breeding at Snowshoe Farm.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed, but have a strong feeling we’ll be taking this boy into the show ring in the spring!
