Putting up hay

2

Finally, after a very wet summer, we have a forecast for several hot, dry days.  Our hay supplier will have the first load of second cut ready for us to pick up in the field tomorrow afternoon.  Stacking bales in the hay mow is hot, scratchy work, but it feels great when you have the mow full of hay and know you have what you need to feed your animals all winter.

We didn’t realize how lucky we were when we bought this farm and it included an old barn with ample hay storage.  We can put up our year’s supply and have room left over. If you’re planning to build, don’t underestimate hay storage!

There’s nothing like the “fresh mown” smell of hay when you walk into the hay mow on a cold winter day!

We had the hay cut in our paddocks. I’m such a city boy that I was fascinated. Walking into that paddock with those big, round hay bales felt like walking among giants.

I love your description of the round bales in your fields! Smaller square bales have much less “presence”.
