Busy birthing day

3

We had a busy day in the barn today with two crias being born. One was an uneventful birth; a first time mother who did just fine and has a healthy and beautiful cria who is nursing well. The second birth was a little more exciting. As soon as I saw Tempest was in labor and there was  a sack protruding, I thought the birth was imminent. But we waited and the birth didn’t progress and it became obvious that I was going to have to go in and check out what was happening. I washed up and lubed up and put my hand in and tried to figure out what we were dealing with. A tail – not good. We paged our vet and, luckily, he was able to head in our direction. An hour later, Andy lubed up, turned the cria’s rear legs and pulled out a beautiful dark brown female cria. She’s one of the most active crias I’ve ever seen – kicking and trashing – I could barely hold onto her to dry her off. She’s up and nursing and neither she nor mom seem to be any worse for the experience.
