The calm before the storm

0

The last few days have been such a gift…mild, calm and dry. We’ve managed to get quite a lot done from our “get ready for winter” list, but Hurricane Sandy has thrown in a few extra chores. While northern VT is not predicted to bear the brunt of this storm, we are expecting very high winds and that means we will very likely lose power. Since we have a well for water and no emergency generator, we have to prepare for such a situation. We have 5-gallon containers of water on hand for the barns as well as many small containers for household use. All small and/or lightweight items have been removed from yard and fields. We’re stocked up with sandwich fixin’s and have plenty of batteries, headlamps, etc. Losing power is something we’re pretty familiar with and it’s more an inconvenience than anything else.

An added problem is that this week I’m getting ready for the Fiber Festival of New England. That means I’m skeining and dyeing yarn, printing labels and patterns – all things that require electricity. Hopefully, we’ll have power at least through most of today and I’ll be in good shape to pack up on Thursday.

We hope all in the path of Sandy stay safe!
