This is a busy time of year for Snowshoe Farm! October is when many people start knitting for the season, especially if they’re making holiday gifts. We have a series events on October weekends which started with the Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival. What a great weekend we had! Next weekend, we will be at Burketoberfest at Burke Mountain on Sunday afternoon. Come on up and enjoy the spectacular fall foliage and check out the new lodge and some very talented … Read More

End of Summer

It’s difficult to believe that autumn begins in a couple days!  The summer has flown by and the weather in recent weeks has been so warm that it has not prompted thoughts of fall. This morning, however, we woke to a temp of 34, a brisk reminder that the season is changing – and fast! The light is different and the trees are turning color. And at Snowshoe Farm we are busy dyeing yarn and preparing for fall fiber festivals.  This … Read More

Fall Festival and Show Season

Fall is here and that means a very busy time on the farm! During the next month, most weekends bring either a fiber festival or an alpaca show. Weekdays are filled with getting ready for the next weekend’s event. That means dyeing yarn, skirting fleeces, chasing down all the odds and ends that go into setting up a vendor space at a fiber festival or a farm display at an alpaca show…and paperwork. Lately, I’ve been skirting fleeces for multiple … Read More

Last fiber festival of the season

Wow – didn’t fall fiber festival season just begin?  Well, it’s over for us!  In past years, we’ve done more events and had a longer season. But we’ve eliminated festivals that were not convenient or good markets for us and this year scheduled only two. The last one of the season was this past weekend in Rhinebeck, NY. The NYS Sheep & Wool Festival is an amazing event and one that we really enjoy. This year the weather was perfect … Read More

Fall fiber festival season begins!

This coming weekend (September 28 & 29) will bring the 25th Annual Vermont Sheep & Wool Festival. This is the kickoff to our very busy fall season of fiber festivals and alpaca shows. The Vermont festival is, of course, one of our favorites. There’s something for everyone from luscious farm-raised fibers and yarn to sheep herding demos and fiberarts contests to local food and maple cremees. And it’s all centrally located in the village of Tunbridge amidst the Vermont hills … Read More

Vermont Alpaca Yarn

Fall fiber festival season has finally come to an end for Snowshoe Farm. That means I can unpack all our boxes of yarn, roving, knitting needles, patterns, dyes, etc and inventory what we have left on hand for our farm store. I know I have a batch of laceweight yarn and one of our alpaca/merino/tencel blend waiting to be skeined and dyed, so we ‘ll have plenty of yarn to offer through the winter. This week, I’ll reorder needles, hooks … Read More

The calm before the storm

The last few days have been such a gift…mild, calm and dry. We’ve managed to get quite a lot done from our “get ready for winter” list, but Hurricane Sandy has thrown in a few extra chores. While northern VT is not predicted to bear the brunt of this storm, we are expecting very high winds and that means we will very likely lose power. Since we have a well for water and no emergency generator, we have to prepare … Read More

Fiber Festival of New England

Snowshoe Farm had a fabulous time at the NYS Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck last weekend! The weather was perfect and the crowds were huge. But with only two weeks between fiber festivals, I’m busy skeining and dyeing for the next event. The Fiber Festival of New England will be held at Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, MA on Nov 3 & 4. This is a great show in one large building, making it warm and dry no matter … Read More

Room with a View

This is the view from my fiber studio. It’s not very exciting on this gray day, but it’s looking a lot like Fall and we love it. And the alpacas, who have quite a bit of fleece grown back by this time of year, love the cooler temps. This is a busy room this time of year as we get ready for Fall fiber festivals. As usual, we have a nice selection of natural colored alpaca yarn as well as … Read More

Fall Fiber Festivals

Fall is fast approaching and that means it’s almost fiber festival time! We’ve received a few new shipments of our alpaca yarn back from the mill. Much of the white and light colored yarn will be dyed like the 100% alpaca fingering shown in the photo. We also have natural colored alpaca yarn ranging from white to very dark brown. This year we have a new sock yarn that’s a blend of alpaca, wool and tencel (to replace the nylon). … Read More
