Alpaca Barn Design

We’ve had requests from time to time for details regarding the design of the feeders in our alpaca barn. Back in 2002 or so we built a new barn for our females. It’s a center aisle barn with hay feeders dividing the pens from the aisle rather than using panels or fence. This allows us to fill the feeders from the aisle, which can be a nice feature if you have some animals that are aggressive about pulling hay from … Read More

Alpaca Transport

This is a heads up for those who are considering purchasing alpacas from Snowshoe Farm. We do offer to transport alpacas to their new homes, but bear in mind that transport is not available during shearing season. This usually runs early April through mid-to-late June.  Ron’s shearing schedule is booked solid and there’s no time for hauling alpacas until shearing is finished. Yes, we can move alpacas now or starting again in late June. Give us a shout if you … Read More

One of our best!

Proven female alpaca on sale! Snowshoe Aria is a daughter of multi-champion Snowshoe Aristides and one of the best female alpacas in our breeding program. Aria, at six years of age, still has a beautiful, crimpy and very fine fleece, just like her sire. We have a number of female alpacas in our herd that are related to Aria, so she is not able to live up to her full potential in our breeding program. Aria is an easy keeper … Read More

Snowshoe Allegro

We’ve held out on offering Snowshoe Allegro for sale. We adore his personality. He’s very calm and loves to have his neck scratched. He definitely has his sire’s personality. His dam, Minuette, is a pretty calm alpaca also.  We’re convinced temperament is heritable! And Allegro has gorgeous fiber. Fine and lustrous with a good staple length. But with his sire, El Dorado Prospector, standing stud here and his dam rebred to Prospector for a 2018 cria, we really don’t have … Read More

Cold!

Our winters might be getting warmer, but you can’t prove it by the temps around here this week. It’s almost noon today and we haven’t made it up to ten below yet! The best thing about this weather is that it usually means clear blue skies and sun.  Those are two things we don’t see enough of during Vermont winters. We’ve talked to a number of alpaca owners over the last few days. Most are people who haven’t had experience … Read More

But there’s more… We now co-own, with Spirit Wind Farm, Xanadu P Concerto, the sire of Maestro. Yes, we’re thrilled to have this breeding pair in our program. As much as we are looking forward to their offspring, we’re offering Philly for sale and at a special year-end price of $5000. Philly is open, but … Read More

Vermont-made, artisan hats

We love to show you how some of our customers are using alpaca fiber from Snowshoe Farm to create beautiful garments, accessories and home decor. Sky Like Snow, based in Bellows Falls, Vermont, produces one-of-a-kind artisan hats. The alpaca and wool fibers for the yarn are sourced from local farms. The yarn is hand dyed using natural dyes from plants and fungi that are farmed and ethically foraged by the artist. The unique double-sided hats are hand made on a … Read More

October Events

There are too many October events!  This year will mark the first time in MANY years that Snowshoe Farm will not be participating in the fall alpaca shows. We did not make this decision lightly, but it makes the most sense for us.  This year, as happens every few years, the fall show in Syracuse conflicts with the NYS Sheep & Wool Festival in Rhinebeck, NY.  The Rhinebeck festival is a big event where we sell a LOT of alpaca … Read More

August Events

Snowshoe Farm will be selling our alpaca yarn and roving at two events in August. Tomorrow, August 9, we will be at the Summer Buy Local Market at the State House in Montpelier, VT. The market hours are 3 to 6:30pm. The weather forecast looks great, so come out and join in the fun. On Saturday, August 19, we will be at the craft fair at the Peacham Acoustic Music Festival. This two-day event takes over our small village each … Read More

Snowshoe Ammonoosuc

On July 4th this year, Snowshoe Ammonoosuc’s first cria was born. Ammonoosuc is the full brother to our multi-champion, Snowshoe Aristides, who is now owned by Little Creek Farm. This cria is more than we could have hoped for and shows us that Ammo is truly following in the footsteps of his big brother. Ammonoosuc is available for breeding. To celebrate his first cria, we are offering a limited number of drive-by breedings to Ammonoosuc for $500 for the month … Read More
