Alpaca Showtacular 2016

Last weekend (Oct 21 – 23) Ron took three yearling alpacas to the Showtacular alpaca show in Syracuse. This show combines the Empire Show and the NEAOBA Show into one long weekend. We were very pleased that all three of our alpacas ribboned in both shows against some very tough competition. The best result of the weekend was a second place finish by Snowshoe Sweet Cicley in the NEAOBA Show. This beautiful yearling female will be ready to breed in … Read More

Livestock Fencing

posted in: Alpacas, Fencing | 0

Ron has had another busy season building livestock fencing for clients. This latest installation will serve to contain animals of various species and sizes, so it includes a tall no-climb fence with a hot wire along the top. The season for fence installation is quite short, since it doesn’t start until shearing season is over in late June.  If you have a need for new or improved fencing, please contact Ron to discuss your options.

Assessing Alpacas

posted in: Alpacas, Birthing, Crias, Fiber | 2

Recently I was asked how early we can assess the quality of an alpaca. I’ve been asked this question before and I usually reply that we generally wait until after the cria’s first “real” shearing (not the shearing that happens a few weeks after birth) and see how the fiber grows back. We don’t assume crias with fine fiber will mature into adults – or even yearlings – with fine fiber. We like to wait and see it happen. In … Read More

Yearling Alpacas

We’ve had a number of inquiries as to why we don’t show prices on the three yearling alpacas we have listed for sale.  Often, we don’t bother to list our younger alpacas for sale until they are a bit older. For the most part, we just like to wait and see how the alpacas do as they mature. We’re not only looking at fleece quality, but conformation and overall health and vitality. Our current sales list includes three alpacas that were … Read More

Lace knitting with worsted weight yarn

I spend a lot of my knitting time working with fingering weight yarn. Socks are one of my favorite items to knit and I also love fingering for shawls and scarves.  Snowshoe Farm produces a lot of fingering weight yarn in 100% alpaca as well as in a number of blends. We’ve only been making worsted weight yarn for two or three years. Personally, I feel worsted weight is too big for 100% alpaca, so our worsted is 50% alpaca/50% … Read More
