End of Summer

It’s difficult to believe that autumn begins in a couple days!  The summer has flown by and the weather in recent weeks has been so warm that it has not prompted thoughts of fall. This morning, however, we woke to a temp of 34, a brisk reminder that the season is changing – and fast! The light is different and the trees are turning color. And at Snowshoe Farm we are busy dyeing yarn and preparing for fall fiber festivals.  This … Read More

Fall Festival and Show Season

Fall is here and that means a very busy time on the farm! During the next month, most weekends bring either a fiber festival or an alpaca show. Weekdays are filled with getting ready for the next weekend’s event. That means dyeing yarn, skirting fleeces, chasing down all the odds and ends that go into setting up a vendor space at a fiber festival or a farm display at an alpaca show…and paperwork. Lately, I’ve been skirting fleeces for multiple … Read More

Vermont Alpaca Yarn

Finally! Our online farm store is live again after months of inactivity. The fall fiber festivals depleted our inventory and we’ve been working hard to skein, wash and dye yarn. You can now purchase alpaca yarn, alpaca roving, knitting needles, crochet hooks and dyes from our online store at www.VermontAlpacaYarn.com. We will be adding patterns to the store very soon and have several new batches of yarn waiting to be skeined and added to the store. Please check back often. … Read More

Dyeing yarn

The last of the white DK yarn is skeined and washed and dry – ready to label. Today I’m handpainting sock yarn. There’s more yarn to be skeined and washed tomorrow so things dry before packing up on Thurs. I have some knitting to do to – … Read More

On Saturday, Oct 10, we will offer the first in a series of workshops for learning how to take a raw alpaca fleece and turn it into yarn.  This first workshop will be a hands-on fiber skirting session.  Bring your own fleece or purchase one of ours at a discounted price. We’ll focus on skirting for processing into yarn, but will also discuss skirting for show. We’ll talk about how to wash the fleece and participants will receive handouts so … Read More

Fall alpaca fiber workshops

In response to requests from several people, I’m planning a series of weekend fiber workshops.  We’ll start with a raw alpaca fleece (ours or yours) and learn how to skirt, wash, card and spin. I’m envisioning a modular format where people can pick and choose which workshops they attend.  And we’ll probably do each one more than once so we can (hopefully) fit most people’s schedules. Check back here, check our website or contact me for more info. I’d also … Read More
