Lace knitting with worsted weight yarn

I spend a lot of my knitting time working with fingering weight yarn. Socks are one of my favorite items to knit and I also love fingering for shawls and scarves.  Snowshoe Farm produces a lot of fingering weight yarn in 100% alpaca as well as in a number of blends. We’ve only been making worsted weight yarn for two or three years. Personally, I feel worsted weight is too big for 100% alpaca, so our worsted is 50% alpaca/50% … Read More

Alpaca Shearing 2016

Done! This is our last victim…er, alpaca…of the day and we are finished shearing our herd.  Snowshoe Allegro, co-owned with Spirit Wind Farm, has the most lustrous fleece I’ve ever seen. I wish I had been able to get a better photo. I’ll give it another try when I skirt his fleece. We are very pleased with the fleeces from last year’s crias and can’t wait to see how they grow back over the summer. Shearing went very well due … Read More

End of Summer

It’s difficult to believe that autumn begins in a couple days!  The summer has flown by and the weather in recent weeks has been so warm that it has not prompted thoughts of fall. This morning, however, we woke to a temp of 34, a brisk reminder that the season is changing – and fast! The light is different and the trees are turning color. And at Snowshoe Farm we are busy dyeing yarn and preparing for fall fiber festivals.  This … Read More

Knitting Projects with Snowshoe Farm Alpaca Yarn

Lace shawls and shawlettes are very popular knitting projects and there’s no better use for a luxuriously fine, drapey alpaca yarn. I just finished the Annis shawlette in 100% hand dyed alpaca from Snowshoe Farm. Annis is a fairly easy pattern. Just be sure to set up for the nupps by working LOOSELY on the knit side. Trust me, it will make the purl 7 together on the purl side work a lot more easily. You can download the pattern … Read More

Alpaca Yarn from Snowshoe Farm

Christmas in July!!  Yesterday we received seven batches of yarn from the mill. This is the last of our 2013 clip. The yarn includes fingering, dk and worsted weight; some are 100% alpaca and some are alpaca blended with wool or wool and tencel.  The colors range from white to light fawn to dark gray. As you can see, we order our yarn on cones and skein it ourselves. This allows for different skein sizes to match up with some … Read More

Alpaca Shearing 2014

Done!  Shearing is THE big spring chore at Snowshoe Farm and it feels so good to have finished. We shear early – usually the end of April – and, being spring in the NEK, the weather rarely cooperates. Generally, the alpacas have to endure a period of chilly temps before warmer spring weather arrives and stays for more than a day or two. We’ve done our shearing during snowstorm on more than one occasion. Yes, our alpacas will probably be … Read More

Last fiber festival of the season

Wow – didn’t fall fiber festival season just begin?  Well, it’s over for us!  In past years, we’ve done more events and had a longer season. But we’ve eliminated festivals that were not convenient or good markets for us and this year scheduled only two. The last one of the season was this past weekend in Rhinebeck, NY. The NYS Sheep & Wool Festival is an amazing event and one that we really enjoy. This year the weather was perfect … Read More
