The market hours are 3 to 6:30pm. The weather forecast looks great, so come out and join in the fun. On Saturday, August 19, we will be at the craft fair at the Peacham Acoustic Music Festival. Slow clothes

Yes, we do have some options for local and sustainably created clothing. We recently had the pleasure of meeting Hannah Regier, a Vermont-based fiber artist. Hannah produces knit hats fashioned from Vermont wool and alpaca fibers, hand-dyed with farmed and foraged plants and knit on a vintage knitting machine. We’re please to have our alpaca fiber included in this excellent example of local, ethical fashion. You can read more about Hannah’s creative process and purchase her hats on her website, … Read More

Lace knitting with worsted weight yarn

I spend a lot of my knitting time working with fingering weight yarn. Socks are one of my favorite items to knit and I also love fingering for shawls and scarves.  Snowshoe Farm produces a lot of fingering weight yarn in 100% alpaca as well as in a number of blends. We’ve only been making worsted weight yarn for two or three years. Personally, I feel worsted weight is too big for 100% alpaca, so our worsted is 50% alpaca/50% … Read More

Alpaca Roving

Attention handspinners: we’re getting ready to send alpaca fiber to the mill to be processed into roving. We’ve been busy washing and dyeing fiber and now have a nice selection of natural and hand dyed colors. These will be blended to make several different batches of multi-colored 100% alpaca roving. We’ll let you know as soon as the roving comes back from Sallie’s Fen Fibers. Our roving will be for sale on our website along with our alpaca yarn and alpaca … Read More

End of Summer

It’s difficult to believe that autumn begins in a couple days!  The summer has flown by and the weather in recent weeks has been so warm that it has not prompted thoughts of fall. This morning, however, we woke to a temp of 34, a brisk reminder that the season is changing – and fast! The light is different and the trees are turning color. And at Snowshoe Farm we are busy dyeing yarn and preparing for fall fiber festivals.  This … Read More

Dyeing Alpaca Fiber

posted in: Alpacas, Dyeing, Felting, Fiber, Yarn | 0

I know most folks are gearing up for the “big game” today, but with no interest in football and no TV, that’s not happening here.  Instead, my afternoon is full of fiber (not unusual for me!). Today I’m dyeing fiber for felting. Here at Snowshoe Farm, we use only our finest alpaca fiber for making the yarns we carry in our shop and online. But we try to make use of all the fiber we harvest from our herd. Not … Read More

Fall Festival and Show Season

Fall is here and that means a very busy time on the farm! During the next month, most weekends bring either a fiber festival or an alpaca show. Weekdays are filled with getting ready for the next weekend’s event. That means dyeing yarn, skirting fleeces, chasing down all the odds and ends that go into setting up a vendor space at a fiber festival or a farm display at an alpaca show…and paperwork. Lately, I’ve been skirting fleeces for multiple … Read More
